Medicare won't cover your nursing home costs

Medicare covers the first 100 days of skilled nursing care โ€” after that, you're on your own. Nursing home care averages $9,000/month. Long-term care insurance, Medicaid planning, and other strategies can protect your savings. Our sister site covers all the options.

What this calculator covers

This tool estimates your core Medicare premiums and typical out-of-pocket costs based on your income tier and coverage choices. It uses 2026 standard rates from Medicare.gov.

Part B base premium in 2026: $185.00/month. Higher earners pay more through IRMAA surcharges starting at incomes above $106,000.

Not included: dental, vision, hearing, long-term care, or costs for services not covered by Medicare. These can add thousands per year.

Tips to lower your Medicare costs

Compare Medicare Advantage plans each year during Open Enrollment (Oct 15 โ€“ Dec 7). Plans change annually and a better option may be available in your area. If you have Original Medicare, a Medigap plan eliminates most out-of-pocket uncertainty. Plan G covers almost everything after the Part B deductible.

For Part D, use Medicare's Plan Finder tool at medicare.gov to find the lowest-cost plan that covers your specific medications โ€” don't just pick the cheapest premium.
